16 Maybe Less

from Iron & Wine by Loren Radis

/

about

Like “Passing Afternoon”, this song seems to me to be about mourning a past love now lost to time. The narrator tells a story at once sweet and familiar but also kind of offensively depressing. He doesn’t love his wife as much as the memory of this other woman and he is (to some extent) absent from his son’s life, but the rose colored wash he’s applied to the memories of his teenage love creates such a wholesome and endearing picture it’s hard to be offended by it. The vocal melody and instrumentation are absolutely flawless and beautiful, as Sam Beam’s songs nearly always are, I could listen to this one all day. This is also the only song on the list where I recorded the guitar and voice together in one take, it feels better not to separate the lyrics, melody, and guitar work on this one.
