Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

about

John Lennon said a lot of things better than a lot of people before and after him were ever able to. He could find just the right words and just the right way to deliver them in a song that could make you see something in a way you'd never seen it before.

I don't know this for a fact but I get the feeling that John wasn't the biggest fan of Christmas. He didn't seem to care for the materialistic and selfish attitudes that can unfrotunately be part and parcel to the holiday. He saw the potential regardless. He saw that we strive to put aside our differences for this short time each year and maybe if we tried harder, and kept trying once the season ended we could actually make a real change in the world.

It's a sobering question he begins the song with; "And so this is Christmas, and what have you done?" Christmas can sneak up on us, it reminds us another year is almost behind us and he suggests we use it as an opportunity to take stock of what we've accomplished and where we could have done better.

He's always been good about including himself in his rebukes to soften the blow, however, ending with the similar question; "And what have we done?". So this Christmas, I hope we can all remember the message John always tried to get through to us in his music, that Love is all you need.

Merry Christmas.

lyrics

And so this is Christmas, and what have you done?
Another year over, a new one just begun
And so happy Christmas, I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one, the old and the young

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear

And so this is Christmas for weak and for strong
For rich and for poor one the world is so wrong
And so this is Christmas for black and for white
For yellow and red one, let's stop all the fight

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear

And so this is Christmas, and what have we done?
Another year over, a new one just begun
And so happy Christmas, I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one, the old and the young

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear

War is over if you want it
War is over now
